The following information came from many sources, some is accurate and
some is questionable
My advice to anyone using this information is to use it as a guideline
for continued research, and to believe nothing until you have personally
verified it.
Generation No. 1
1. PETER1 BOWMAN died 1763. He married MARGARET BOWMAN.
Notes for PETER BOWMAN:
The following is a note I E-mailed another cousin some time ago. She posted the note on RootsWeb when she listed Cornelius, his wife and his parents.
Note from Tom Ashworth, researcher and descendant:
"We know that Peter Bowman is the father of Cornelius because of a note written by family members in 1901. In that note, it states that "Aunt Sythe" (my gg-grandmother Siretha Sebourn) had sent a record,
apparently written in her mother's hand (in other words, written by Sarah Bowman Gabbard, b. 1798), outlining family relationships.
According to the note, which is in the possession of David Travillion Bunton of Russellville, Arkansas (and is shown in the Cornelius Bowman book recently written by Edward Bowman): "Grandfather Cornelus Bowman Neal - Grandfather Neal Bowman was son of Peter Bowman and Margaret Bowman. Grandma Bowman married a Van Peldt" ... "Written by Sally Gabbard for ???? Aunt Sythe sent record to ???? ???? their mother's hand." In another place, the note states: "Grandma Elizabeth Gentry Gabbard was bornd April the 23rd Day 1833. Edward Gabbard & Sarah Bowman her parents." [The note is displayed on page D 30 of Ed Bowman's book, "Cornelius Bowman, A Founding Father of America and some of His Ancestors and Descendants".]
"Two records of the general time of Peter's death place Cornelius in the same general area where Peter lived: (1) a record from the Peaked Mountain Church shows Cornelius "Boman" marrying Susannah Pointer on March 19th, 1764; and (2) the April 16, 1767, record of the court martial of Cornelius for missing militia meetings. Again, the first record mentioned apparently gives the name of Cornelius' wife -
Susannah Pointer. [Some believe her name could be Susannah Painter.] All of this is well documented in the Ed Bowman book."
The note also mentions Sarah "Sally" Bowman being the daughter of Elizabeth Gentry and Elijah Bowman, and Elijah's mother being named "Susanah." Additional information is given about the Harrison family.
This note mirrors information from other credible sources. First, we must remember that family tradition, mentioned many times, associates Peter's son Cornelius with the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Cornelius, it is believed, was either born in the Shenandoah, or raised in that historic "Valley of Virginia." As we shall see, numerous records associate Peter with that area, and two records show a Cornelius in the area - a Cornelius who would be the right age to be Peter's son.
First, let's look at the Peter, who undoubtedly is Cornelius' father. That Peter died in about 1763. Two court records from the time are instructive: (1) Record of February 17, 1763: appointed Margaret Bowman Van Pelt as the administratrix of Peter's estate. [Please remember that the family note from 1901 mentions "grandma" Margaret Bowman who married a Van Pelt.] And (2), a court record of March 1764 mentions: "Cornelius Bowman father of George and Peter Bowman. Peter Bowman's widow Margaret married Van Pelt." http://searcjes.rootsweb.com/cgi.bin/ifetch?/U1/data/va+index+56711211643+f]
Another court document of February 13, 1763, mentions a Daniel Smith bond on behalf of Margaret Van Pelt and with Francis McBride as administrator for Peter Bowman.
All of the court records are directly and explicitly supportive of the family note of 1901 - we have a Peter Bowman in the area where Cornelius supposedly lived as a child/youngman, we have Peter's wife named Margaret, and we have Margaret marrying a Van Pelt after Peter dies. We also have Peter's father being named Cornelius - all based on court records.
Two records of the general time of Peter's death place Cornelius in the area: (1)
a record from the Peaked Mountain Church shows Cornelius "Boman" marrying Susannah Pointer on March 19th, 1764; and (2) the April 16, 1767, record of the court martial of Cornelius for missing militia meetings. Both these records are in the general area where Peter lived and died near the Shenandoah River south of New Market, Virginia.
March Court, 1760 [Possibly our Peter Bowman]
Peter BOWMAN, having sworn an oath in the presence of this Court, he is fined and having also behaved contemptuously to the Court, ordered that he be placed into the custody of the Sheriff until he gives security for good behavior for 1 year.
Child of PETER BOWMAN and MARGARET BOWMAN is:
2. i. CORNELIUS (NEAL)2 BOWMAN, b. 1740, Shenandoah Valley, Virginia; d. January 05, 1826, Booneville, Owsley County Kentucky.
Generation No. 2
2. CORNELIUS (NEAL)2 BOWMAN (PETER1) was born 1740 in Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, and died January 05, 1826 in Booneville, Owsley County Kentucky. He married SUSANNAH ABBOTT POINTER March 19, 1764 in Harrisonburg, Rockingham County Virginia. She was born 1745 in Virginia, and died May 13, 1810 in Elliston, Madison County Kentucky.

Notes for CORNELIUS BOWMAN, SR:
I have been corresponding with Ed Bowman who has been doing lots of serious snooping into the origins of Cornelius Bowman Sr. and wife Susannah. Recently, Ed sent me the text of a letter he received from Faye A. Witters of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham (VA) Historical Society. Ms. Witters responded to Ed, saying that the H-R.H.S. has a notebook (The Session Book of Peaked Mountain And Cook's Creek Presybterian Churches by Richard K. MacMaster) containing seven marriage records from the Peaked Mountain Meeting House (Presbyterian) located just south of Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., VA. One of these marriages reads:
Married in 1764 March 19th
Cornelius Boman
Susanna Painter
Ed says that the Peaked Mountain Meeting House was the forerunner of the Massanutten Cross Keys Church. The location would have been 7 miles south of Harrisonburg, VA, is probably where Cross Keys is now located. He says that the Cross Keys Church eventually became the Union Church which was burned during the civil war and that Cross Keys was apparently recreated in 1920 and dissolved in 1967.
The marriage record is a very good fit -- I believe Ed has found our Cornelius and Susannah! Harrisonburg lies within the Shenandoah Valley (legend has linked our Cornelius to that region), and the date is about right. Eldest sons John and William are said to have been born ca. 1760/65. Several of the other families affiliated with the Bowmans are also linked to Rockingham and Rockbridge Counties.
If correct, our Susannah was a Painter, not an Abbott. Although Painter seems at first to be an English surname, researchers of the Painter family of the Shenandoah Valley say they were German -- "Painter" was anglicized from the German "Bender".
Supposedly, the Painter/Bender family was descended from Matthaus Bender b. 1677 Mannheim, Palatinate, Germany, d. 1744 New Hanover Twp., York Co., PA; he m. Anna (Mary) Catharina b. 1681 Palatinate, d. 1764 New Hanover Twp, York Co., PA. You can find more by checking out the Painter Family GenForum.
I now believe our Cornelius was from one of the several German Bowman (Bauman) families of the Shenandoah region. But which one? There are at least three or four! There are several interesting hints that point toward a link to the Jacob Bowman
(Bauman) (m. Elizabeth Ungert) clan, but nothing definite.
Ed Bowman also reports finding a reference to an Elizabeth Bowman marrying a William Waters on Dec 8, 1778 in Wilkes Co., NC. The clerk was William Lenoir and the witnesses were Moses Bowman and Isaac Elledge. (Note: Cornelius' grandson William (s/o John) married Malinda "Mandy" Waters 1807 Clay Co KY; the Waters family was evidently connected to our Bowmans, suggesting that Moses Bowman was some early relative of Cornelius??)

Notes for SUSANNAH ABBOTT POINTER:
5th Great Grandmother of Winfred C. Tipton the writer.
Susannah Abbott/Painter/Pointer-Bowman buried at Booneville Ky.
There is some question about whether she was a Painter, Pointer, or Abbott, some say she was
neither that she was a Williamson. (hence Elisha Williamson Bowman)...
"Two records of the general time of Peter's death place Cornelius in the same general area where Peter lived:
(1) a record from the Peaked Mountain Church shows Cornelius "Boman" marrying Susannah Pointer on March 19th, 1764; and
(2) the April 16, 1767, record of the court martial of Cornelius for missing militia meetings. Again, the first record mentioned apparently gives the name of Cornelius' wife - Susannah Pointer. [Some believe her name could be Susannah Painter.] All of this is well documented in the Ed Bowman book."
Marriage Notes for CORNELIUS BOWMAN and SUSANNAH POINTER:
Married in the Peaked Mtn. Meeting house.
A Love Story, (Published, but source unknown.)
Old Cornelius Bowman and wife, Susan, lived in Madison County, Kentucky. The time came when Susan died and was buried on the waters of Muddy Creek. After Susan died, the children began to worry about their father living by himself. They went to see him and took wagons to move him up to the South Fork Country to live with them. When they told the old man the purpose of the visit, he flatly replied, "I won't go unless I can take Susan." Finally, it was decided that they would have to comply with their father's wish. Susan was dug up. Her coffin was loaded in a wagon. It has not been determined how long Susan had been dead. The moving party arrived back in the South Fork Country too late in the day to rebury Susan. At the old man's insistence the coffin was placed on his bed that night, and once more he slept beside Susan. When someone asked, "Why?" He replied, "Because I always loved Susan."
Further research indicates that this story has been somewhat exaggerated, according to descendents
of this family they were indeed moving the old couple up river by wagon to live with the children when
Susan died enroute. Also family members indicate that it was unheard of for any Bowman to care
that much for any woman..So could the rest of the story be fabricated..Who Knows???

BRANDENBURG FAMILY
Dictated by
John H. Brandenburgh, II (Jr.)
Madison County, Kentucky
June 04, 1845 - December 30, 1924
(before his death)
Writer unknown
The most remote ancestor that I know anything of, was a German subject, bearing the name of Brandenburgh, who resided in luxury and ease upon a large and magnificent landed estate, "Brandenburg" in Germany until the time he refused and did not salute his sovereign in passing, which
was an offense regarded as hostile to his reign, the punishment the loss of the head, and not being inclined to suffer the penalty, Brandenburgh made his escape and took refuge in crossing the great ocean, the Atlantic, to America, out of range of the emperor and to where his authority did not extend, whose word in his own realm was law, and so Brandenburgh made his permanent abode after this in this country and became a staunch supporter of the government of the United States of America and scorned that of the land of his nativity and this Brandenburgh became the founder of my branch of the Brandenburgh family in this country. The name of the wife or her pedigree is unknown to me, but I suppose this branch of the family would never have existed as it has if it had been different, but so it was, and couldn't have been otherwise, for a kind Providence so ruled. The large and magnificent estate of the Refugee, "Brandenburgh", was confiscated and taken over and appropriated to and by the Crown, and from it not a mite has been received by the Refugee or any of his descendants and no effort made to recover same for such an effort would have been unavailing. A son and Solomon Brandenburgh (if a son, I do not know) accompanied the Refugee Immigrant to this land of freedom and liberty. Solomon Brandenburgh, after coming to this country, was raised to the rank of Colonel and he settled in Meade County, Kentucky, which is on the western border of the state, below Louisville, on the Ohio River,
the river separating it from Indiana; the county seat, Brandenburgh, was named in honor of this Colonel Solomon Brandenburgh. The son who accompanied the Refugee to America, was named Matthias
Brandenburgh. I do not know who Matthias married, but he was killed on Stoner Creek in Clark county, Kentucky, whilst running his horse and was thrown - his head striking a tree - knocking the life out of him. There was very little intercourse or communication, so far as I have been told, between Colonel Solomon Brandenburgh and the Matthias Brandenburgh branch who had settled in the middle eastern region of the state, and the history of the families was not very well kept up with and consequently lost to the posterity. Samuel Brandenburgh, a grandson of the German Immigrant and Refugee, married Miss Sarah Hanson, related to General Roger Hanson, the exact degree of kinship to me I do not know. He settled, probably, in Owsley County, Kentucky, or in the region that later was embraced within the
bounds thereof. John H. Brandenburgh, (great grandson of the Immigrant Refugee, and a son of Samuel Brandenburgh and wife, Miss Sarah Hanson), married Deborah Bowman, daughter of Elijah Bowman, son of Mr. Cornealous Bowman and wife Miss Elizabeth Gentry, the latter who was an inhabitant of the Fort at Boonesborough, Kentucky. They settled in Owsley County, Kentucky, their old home being cut off into the bounds of Lee County when established. Miss Elizabeth Gentry who married Mr. Cornealous Bowman, the mother of Elijah Bowman (whose wife's name was also "Elizabeth") and the grandmother of Miss Deborah Bowman, and my great grandmother, was an inhabitant of the Fort at Boonesborough, Kentucky, during the stormy period of the fort's existence, and was intimately acquainted with the way they lived and all about the fort life, knew the old pioneers, Daniel Boone, Squire Boone, Simon Kenton, Flanders Calloway, Thomas Brooks, Jesse Copher, their wives and children, and many others who were
inhabitants and defenders of the fort, hunters and scouts, some of the sojourners and visitors, and could relate many thrilling incidents that occurred. She remembered the commotion that was created when Jemima Boone and Betty & Fannie Calloway were captured whilst canoeing in the river near the fort, and taken away by the Indians, and the rapid movement of Daniel Boone, Flanders Calloway and others getting ready to pursue the Indians, which they did with success and when they returned from the pursuit with the girls, she heard them tell how, when approaching near the vagabonds, they crept up close and took a view of the situation and formed their branches and then made a double quick rush -- with their flintlocks and hunting knives in trim -- and dispatched the savages, and safely secured the girls and returned with them to Boonesborough, and of the great rejoicing in the fort on their return with them and she heard the girls tell their experiences whilst in captivity; how they tore strips from their aprons and broke twigs from the bushes and scattered them along the way and made impressions with the ground with the heels of their shoes, that the pursuers might more easily follow the trail, they having faith that pursuit would soon follow, and when the guns fired, Jemima Boone, recognizing Daniel Boone's gun, remarked, "That's father's gun!" She could tell many occurrences around about and in the fort that were thrilling in the extreme, that I cannot remember. She told that once Daniel Boone was absent on a scout and every morning early was heard gobbling, thought to be that of a turkey gobbler, and when Daniel Boone returned, he was told of it and he remarked, "I'll get him in the morning, he'll help make a good dinner tomorrow". And bright and early the next morning Daniel Boone took his gun and hunting knife and went down near the sycamore tree where it was thought the gobbling came from and hid under the bank of the river not far from the tree, and soon he heard the gobbling and directly discovered that it was an Indian imitating a gobbler, and he fired, the gobbling ceased, and that Indian never gobbled again. She knew of the marriage of Flanders Calloway to Miss Jemima Boone, and of Betty Calloway to Sam Henderson, and she related that Reverend Joe Procter, the noted scout, would never say that he had killed an Indian, had a younger brother in the fort name Page Procter, and once when Joe was about to start on a scouting, young Procter then only about 16 years old, begged to go along, and he let him, and whilst out, and Indian got after Page -- with tomahawk drawn in an attitude to strike -- and was uncomfortably close to Page, who quickly skedaddled, when Joe fired nothing more was known of that Indian. Page returned to his brother rather nervous and somewhat excited, and thought he had a narrow escape with his life, and sometimes would tell the younger set of this experience. She also said she molded bullets for the defenders of the fort -- more especially when besieged by Indians, often with whites aiding them -- Simon Girty, the renegade, was there with them once, and Elizabeth told of biting off the necks of the bullets with her teeth till her lips would get too sore to do so.

Notes for HENRY B. BOWMAN:
It was told to me by Blanton Bowman, son of Bluford Bowman and grandson of Henry Bowman, that Henry B. Bowman had a son (name I do not know at this time) who was called by the Rebels to take them across the river (near the place where the Booneville-Jackson bridge is located at this time) and when the child reached the middle of the river, he was thrown out of the boat and beat to death. His body was found at the bar below the location of the bridge now. This child was 9+ years of age. I had never heard this from dad and did not know it when granddaddy, L. Carter Bowman, was still living. Would like to recall granddaddy back for a short time and ask him some questions about his family. At this time, I have no idea where this child is buried.
Tinsley Bowman always said that three of his aunts went West and only one returned for visits afterwards. Some of his aunts and uncles were unknown by him and I could get no information about their families from Dad.

Lewis whil still a teenager is believed to have aided members of the Union Army in crossing the river near Booneville and afterward shoved into the water and drowned.
Notes for LEWIS BOWMAN:
Robert Smith told me, Ella Bowman Addison, that this was the child who was killed by the rebels, while he was bringing them across the river in a boat. He was only 9+ years of age. The rebels had called him to come across the river with the boat and bring them across. When they got middle of the river, the rebels beat him with their gun butts and killed the child. He was found later down the river. I have been unable to locate his grave and Dad, Tinsley Bowman, said that he had never heard this from his dad, Landon Carter Bowman, but this was told to me by Bluford Bowman's family. This is probably true as there is no record of this child after his birth, which is listed in the old Bowman Family Bible of Landon Carter Bowman, in possession of Ella B. Addison.
