Carrie Cox my grandmother was the only real mother i ever had since she raised me, and to me she was the greatest person i ever knew. I never heard her ever say anything bad about anyone but i have seen her shake her head a few times. During the depression days of the 30's a lot of people were starving but when anyone came by, which was often she would always feed them and give them food to take home. We were far from being wealthy but we knew how to raise food and we would spend all summer canning food for the winter. I never could understand why the other neighbors could'nt do the same. Winfred Tipton 1/17/97 Notes for ANDREW FRANKLIN COX: Born on Upper Creek three miles north of Proctor Ky. Andrew Franklin Cox, Corporal 4th Ky Inf. Spanish American War..... Andrew was discharged in 1899. He spent several years out west during the early years of his marriage and the first 3 children were born out there. He worked at many jobs out west including driving a 20 mule team borax wagon in Death Valley. After returning to Ky and settling down near Crystal, in Lee County Ky. he was a Constable for the New Virginia Settlement in Lee County, was also a Notary Public, and a surveyor as his name appears on many Deeds in Lee Co. and ran for public office several times, He was considered to be a country lawyer who assisted neighbors in filing legal papers etc. He also wrote articles for the Beattyville Times newspaper, and has poem(s) published in various historical publications of Lee County. He is buried in the Crabtree Cemetary at the Mr. Paran Church at Little Sinking Ky along with Ethelbert Cox (son), Clyde Hogan (brother in law), and Rudell Cox (son). Written by: Winfred C. May 19, 1895, Lee County Ky; d. October 08, 1937, Lee County Ky. Notes for CLYDE R. HOGAN: Clyde Hogan it seems was always in some kind of trouble, he was in jail in New York when his brother in law Andrew Cox managed to get him released and he returned to Lee County. He and his Brother in law Boone Dennis opened a saloon at Sandfield Ky. across the road from the old general store In 1936 he was shot inside the saloon and staggered out into the highway and fell dead. Only Boone Dennis, his son Zack, and a local was present. No one was ever held accountable for his murder. According to accounts over the years from many people it seems that he was considered a dangerous man and most people was afraid of him which probably had some bearing on his death. He was married at some time in his life as he had 1 son Ralph Hogan who committed suicide while in the U. S. Army. 15.
