Several things don't make any sense here,,,however the childrens ages match the marriages dates.
5 children Sarah, Savilla, William, Lavina and Mary born before the 2nd marriage in 1852,
6 children Ollie, Lizzie, Dillard, Rebecca , Allie and John born after 2nd marriage in 1852.

Randall was shown living in Iowa in 1880 with wife Martha Estes, and died in Spout Springs in Estill Co. Ky in 1895 and Martha died in Iowa in 1891. I suppose he could have returned home after Martha died.

The only other answer is were there two Randall Crow;s...

I am not sure about some of this data but Randall Crowe married Sally Ann Tipton in 1852, so it seems
that the last four children would have been Sally's., however according to this record Martha was still
married to Randall, and they lived in Iowa, also Randall was supposed to have died in Ky. in 1895, and
Martha in 1891. Need more data....

Joseph Letcher Tipton was a medical doctor and farmer and was wealthy for that day and time, he
also owned slaves until the end of the Civil War.
Joseph and Sally Ann were first cousins, and the g,g grandparents of the writer Winfred Tipton.

Caswell the son of Joseph and Sally were the writers g,grandparents and according to family legend
when the civil war was over and the slaves were free it obviously took them a while to leave the area
as they did not have any place to go, or even know which way to start, and many of them probably
did'nt want to leave. However when they were all gone it seems that a small boy was left all alone,
so not knowing what to do with him the Tipton family kept and raised him until he became 18 years of age at which time he left and was never heard from again.

W. H. Tipton, blacksmith and farmer of Little Black Township, Randolph County, Ark., was born in Boone County, Mo., June 26, 1832, and is one of nine surviving members of a family of ten children born to Samuel and Sarah (Lynch) Tipton, whose native States were Kentucky and Virginia, respectively. The father removed to Missouri about 1828, and was a successful farmer of Boone County for six or seven years, but the most of his attention was given to the trade of blacksmithing. In 1837 he moved to Macon County, and settled in Bloomington, where he worked at blacksmithing for several years, and then bought a farm on which he settled. From 1846 until the breaking out of the war he resided in Schuyler County, Mo., but in the first year of the Rebellion he was taken
prisoner by the Union army, and since that time no knowledge of him has ever come to the family. He was a member of the Baptist Church, and his marriage occurred in 1827.
His widow resides in Iowa, and their children are as follows: W. H., John T. (in
Virginia), Samuel (in Iowa), James (in Nebraska), Harrison (deceased, whose family reside in Montana), Elizabeth (the deceased wife of Ezariah Padgett, of Texas), Mary F. (wife of H. C. Grimes, a traveling salesman, who resides in Plattsmouth, Mo.) and Sarah (wife of James Van Cleve, a farmer). W. H. Tipton started out to struggle with the world at the age of eighteen years, and although his early education was neglected he is accounted one of the intelligent and well-posted men of the county. He first went to California, where he was engaged in mining three years, but returned in 1854 via the Gulf of Mexico, and landed in New York City. From there he proceeded to Schuyler County, Mo., and began assisting his father in the blacksmith shop, continuing this until the breaking out of the Rebellion, when he joined the Confederate army under Capt. McCullough, but was on detail the most of the time, being engaged in shoeing horses. After the close of hostilities he went to Illinois with Judge J. H. Richardson of this county, and remained there until 1866, when he moved to Randolph County and
settled in Little Black Township, where he went to farming and blacksmithing, and has continued these occupations up to the present time. He owns 240 acres of land, and has given two of his sons eighty acres each, besides much personal property. May 31, 1855, he was married to Miss Harriet E. Wadsworth, of Illinois, and their nine children were as follows: three died in infancy; Mary E., deceased wife of B. J. Norris, of Texas; Claiborne W., who was accidentally killed, being fatally crushed by a log while he was working in a saw-mill, his death occurring January 30, 1888, in his twenty-fourth year; S. C., residing in Pocahontas; Robert E. S., at home; B. S. and Antoinette. Mr. and Mrs. Tipton are members of the Baptist Church, and [p.438] he is a member of the A. F. & A. M., his children, S. C., B. S. and Antoinette, also being members of the Baptist Church. He is a Democrat. Robert E. S. Tipton was born in Randolph County, Ark., September
26, 1867, and married, November 8, 1888, Miss Amelia A. Smith, whose birth occurred in Marshall County, Ky., December 11, 1867.

MILITARY: Confederate Army. Lost left arm and was thought dead. He had been transferred to the Trans-Mississippi Department which embraced Missouri, Arkansas, Indian Territory and Louisiana west of the Mississippi.

Story goes that he showed up after Sarah had married Joel and had children by him. She elected to stay with Joel and their children.

John took his two sons by Sarah and returned to Virginia where as far as we know stayed there.

OBITUARY: Mrs. S. A. Tipton died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wood, in El Paso, Monday night at 10:30, age 84 years. Mrs. Tipton was born in Calloway Co., Missouri, and was married to Mr. Tipton 64 years ago. They moved to this country about 40 years ago, where Mr. Tipton died 25 years ago. Of this union 6 children were born, five of whom are still living, Mrs. J. S. Bond and Mrs. E. Wood of El Paso, Supt. R. S. Tipton of Alamogordo, Rev. R. S. of Cox Canyon , and Mrs. C. T. Duncan of Alamogordo, with whom she had made her home for several years. The funeral services were conducted by B. Duncan, from the Church of Christ, Wednesday morning at 10:00 o'clock . Mrs. Tipton was a devout member of this denomination for many years.

There were several mistakes in this obituary. 64 years was incorrect, and Joel was never in New Mexico. It should have been P. S. Tipton of Cox Canyon. Sarah is buried in a plot with Myra's husband, C.T. Duncan, and Myra's niece, Mrs. Alma Gladys and two sons Byron and Oscar. The marker has "MOTHER" Mrs. S.A. Tipton, b. June 28 1837, d. April 26 1920. Above Mr. Duncan's name is "HUSBAND" and above Alma Gladys' name is "NIECE." There were several places in the plot between Mr. Duncan and Alma (She and the two boys are all buried together), then Sarah is in next place. Evidently Myra planned on being buried there beside her husband at the time the markers were put up. The story goes that Alma was killed by some in-laws on her way to church with the boys. This cemetery plot is located in the Alamogordo Cemetery on Canyon Road. It is approximately in the center of the cemetery on the right-hand side of the road just past the second side road.

Wallace Daniel Tipton, 80, of Cow Creek Road, Ravenna, died Wednesday at his home after a short illness. He was a native of Estill County, son of the late Robert Letcher and Martha Walling Tipton. He was a plumbing contractor and a member of local
452 Plumbing and Pipe Fitters Union, Lexington and a member of the Stafford Masonic Lodge #562.

Survivors in addition to his wife are two sons, three daughters, one brother, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Oct. 24 at Lewis Funeral Home with burial at the Barnes Cemetery, Cow Creek.
Masonic Rites were held Saturday, Oct. 23 at lewis Funeral Home.

The old Cox homestead where I was born and raised is about a mile from the old Caswell Tipton homestead.

Caswell is buried at the Logue Cemetery on the old Logue place.

Jesse H. Smyth and Wife Nannie Thacker were large landowners on Billys Fork which bordered on the
Lee/Estill Co. Line. Nannie's father William S. Thacker was wealthy for the times and only had two
daughters as their only son died young. When Wm. S. died all the property was left to the families of the two daughters Nannie (Mrs Jesse H. Smyth) and Belle (Mrs Critt Cox). Nannie's son Donnelly Smyth was given about 160 acres and he built a large two story house, donated a piece of land for the Donnelly School and subsequently sold the house and entire farm to Andew F. Cox. The other daughter Belle Thacker married Crittenden F. Cox a Virginian and first cousin to Andrew F. Cox.
Critt & Belle owned a large farm adjoining the Andrew F. Cox farm and between the years of 1900 and 1910 Critt;s father Franklin Cox came up from Virginia and stayed 10 years and built the large two story home occupied by Critt and Belle.

In about 1930 the entire Smyth family except Donnelly sold all their remaining holdings and moved to Peru Indiana where they spent the remainder of their lives. They were later joined there by three of
Donnelly's children Brent, Hobert and Ernest. At this writing 11-3-2002 Hobart is still living at Peru
and Ernest is in a nursing home at Richmond Ky.
I called Hobart Smyth 11-3-2002 and he verified that Jesse Harry Smyth was indeed a son of James
Smyth and Elizabeth Tipton.

I was told in May of 2003 by Omer Beckley that Jonathan Samples was attempting to pass through
a draw Bar Gate on Crit's property when Crit told him not to open the gate. When Jonathan opened
it anyway Crit shot at him thus blinding him in both eyes...
This makes sense due to the fact that Jonathan lived on the hill above Crit's farm and passing
through Crit's property was a short cut...
The same story above was told to me but concerning Jesse H. Smyth...
March 22, 2004 I talked to Hobart Smyth today and he confirmed that his grandfather Jesse H. Smyth
was indeed the man who was shot and blinded by his brother in law Crit Cox, and that his grandfather
was blind until his death.
This is a conflicting story as I have talked to other people who confirmed that Jonathan Samples was
blinded by a gun shot, but from whom.

Following is a newspaper report from the Jackson Hustler...
April 28, 1904.
As the result of a difficulty over a water gap, Jonathan Samples, of Lee county, was taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital, Lexington, Monday, suffering with serious wounds infliced by a neighbor Hooker Childres. Childers used a shotgun loaded with bird shot, the charge striking Samples in the face and a number of the shot entering his eyes. His physicians took out the right eye of Samples, which was terribly lacerated, and it was feared the patient would lose the other eye from the same cause. Beyond the loss of his eyes, it is not thought Samples' injuries are serious. - Jackson Hustler.

Mrs. Nannie D. Thacker Smyth died Saturday, Dec. 15, 1945 at the home of her son E. D. Smyth at Peru, Ind. She would have been 75 years old next June. She was the widow of the late Jesse H. Smyth and the daughter of the late Wm. S. and Emily Cole Thacker of the Donnelly community. She is survived by three sons, Donnelly H. Smyth, Crystal, Luke B. and Elry D. Smyth of Peru, Ind. Burial was at Peru.
