Major William Lexius Tipton (Civil War Union Army)
Once while William was home on leave during the Civil War, the confederates came through looking for him. He was there with his wife and children, and he knew that if he started anything there , they would get hurt and maybe killed.
There were former neighbors serving with the rebels, men who knew all about the house, there was'nt any place to hide. taking the only chance he knew that might avoid a fight then and there, he hid under the hoops of his wife's skirts.
They searched the house, the barns, the sheds, the cribs, the cellar, the spring house, and everywhere but did'nt find him. The only damage they did was burn down the smokehouse full of meat. As soon as the rebels were gone he rode as hard as he could back to the Union lines to warn his superiors that Morgan's raiders were on the move. This happened at Tipton's ridge Kentucky.

in 1810, 1820 or 1850, they were all from Bath Co. and the only other Ginter that I can find in Estill Co.
was her nephew Samuel Ginter who settled in Estill Co. Ky., Also several of the Tipton's intermarried with families from Bath Co.

with her widowed daughter Mary Frances Schooler, and Mary's son Charley P. Schooler age 5.
Living next door to Levisa was another daughter Sally Ann, with husband Joseph Tipton, and family in household #117. Also living with Sally Ann was her nephew Reuben P. Cole, 18, son of Wm. Simpson
Cole and Sarah Watson.

I have a problem with Levisa's age due to children being born in her late 40's, daughter Elizabeth Ellen was not shown in 1870.

Joseph Letcher Tipton was a medical doctor and farmer and was wealthy for that day and time, he
also owned slaves until the end of the Civil War.
Joseph and Sally Ann were first cousins, and the g,g grandparents of the writer Winfred Tipton.

Caswell the son of Joseph and Sally were the writers g,grandparents and according to family legend
when the civil war was over and the slaves were free it obviously took them a while to leave the area
as they did not have any place to go, or even know which way to start, and many of them probably
did'nt want to leave. However when they were all gone it seems that a small boy was left all alone,
so not knowing what to do with him the Tipton family kept and raised him until he became 18 years of age at which time he left and was never heard from again.

Joseph Letcher Tipton was a medical doctor and farmer and was wealthy for that day and time, he
also owned slaves until the end of the Civil War.
Joseph and Sally Ann were first cousins, and the g,g grandparents of the writer Winfred Tipton.

Caswell the son of Joseph and Sally were the writers g,grandparents and according to family legend
when the civil war was over and the slaves were free it obviously took them a while to leave the area
as they did not have any place to go, or even know which way to start, and many of them probably
did'nt want to leave. However when they were all gone it seems that a small boy was left all alone,
so not knowing what to do with him the Tipton family kept and raised him until he became 18 years of age at which time he left and was never heard from again.

Mrs. Nancy Smyth

Mrs. Nancy Cole Smyth died early wednesday morning at the Central Hotel, where she had made her home with her daughter Mrs. Sherman(Lou) Robbins. She had been an invalid six years but died a victim of pneumonia. Mrs Smyth was 91 years old last wednesday Sept. 10, and the last meal she was able to eat was her birthday dinner. She had been a member of the Methodist Church for more than 75 years, was the mother of four daughters two of whom are dead. The two surviving are Mrs. Sherman Robbins of this city and Mrs. Sarah Snowden of Patsy. A short service was held at the home last night and the remains will be taken today to the old home above furnace for burial.

She had many friends in Clay City - (Clay City Times) at an earlier day there came to the Threeforks Country a pioneer William Cole, he was a nephew of the noted Wm. Jasper who figured in the Revolutionary War at Savannah Ga. his wife was Marticia Crawford a cousin of Col. Wm. Crawford who was buried by the Indians at Chillicothe, her brother Valentine, Arch and others were noted pioneers of Estill, which then included most of Lee.

William Cole's son James was the father of Mrs. Smyth another of his sons was the first Sheriff of Lee in 1870 and there were others, prominent in the social and business affairs of the Country. James Cole was killed one night in 1864 near Greely on Little Sinking, when the horse he was riding went over a cliff.
On behalf of many of our readers who are related to Mrs. Smyth - Coles, Crawfords, Smyths, and their kith and kin we send to her memory with this bit of history, a sorrowful farewell.

Mrs Nancy Smyth
In memory of Mrs. Nancy Smyth wife of the late George Smyth, who was a brother of
James and Addison Smyth, who was once County Clerk of Lee County deceased was the daughter of the late James Cole, a sister of Henry and B. B. Cole and Mrs Armenia Mansfield, Emily Thacker, and Mrs Joseph Tipton and Mary Schooler. All have preceded her to the grave.
She was the mother of 4 children all girls, Agatha Moberly deceased, Caroline deceased, wife of G. W. Childers, Sarah, wife of G. R. Snowden, and Lulu wife of Sherman Robbins.
She was ninety one years and seven days old and had lived a devoted christian life, having been a member of the Methodist Church for seventy five years, she was loved
by all who knew her as she was always ready to help the needy and sick so far as she was able, and from her past life we believe she is forever free from pain and sorrow.
Her funeral was preached at the grave by Rev. Wm. Warner of the Christian Church who delivered a very impressive sermon.

Thacker/Donnelly Cemetery
This old Cemetery was originally the Thacker Cemetery and in the 1930's was surrounded by a beautiful wrought iron fence and completely covered with honeysuckle vines and you could'nt see any of the stones. In the 1918's Wm.'s daughter Nannie now a widow divided the land and her son Donnelly ended up with that part of the land. He donated a small lot next to the Cemetery to the county and they built the Donnelly School there. He then built a large home about a hundred yards from the cemetery which he later sold to Andrew Cox along with the rest of his land.
Donnelly's brother Ellery sold his part of the land across the creek to the Gross family and moved
to Peru Indiana in the late 1920's. Omer Beckley aquired the old Ellery Smyth farm in the mid 1940's
and subsequently bought most of the land in the valley all the way to route 52. My stepfather Grant
Walling bought the old Donnelly School and tore it down in the 1960's and sold the land to Omer.
Omer has since removed the fence and all of the vines from the cemetery and installed a new chain link fence, but now most of the tombstones have been stolen or destroyed. The cemetery is now referred to
as the Donnelly Cemetery. Winfred C. Tipton 2-26-2002.

Notes for BURDINE B. COLE:
Burdine's mother was living with him in 1870 after his father James was killed in 1864, his wife
Nancy was still living in the old home in 1900 and son Ephraim was living next door. After Nancy
died the farm was sole to Charley Watson. This leads me to believe that Burdine and Nancy lived
in the same house that Burdine's parents James & Levisa had lived. That house was originally
a log house but after Charley Watson aquired it he installed lap siding. That is the house that
I remember which set below Highway 52 about 1/2 mile west of Crystal Ky. at the Estill/Lee Co.
line. Ephraim's house was a log house built in two sections connected by a covered porch and
sat across Millers Creek to the south. They are all gone now. 3-5-2002. W. C. Tipton.
